Vina
Santa Cruz specialties:
Chaman
(verietal)
Gran
Chaman ( Reserve )
They
started production in 2005, and are expected to be reach their peak
in 2009.
Beyond
the standard wines that they sell such as Merlot, we also managed to
convince our guide that we loved Syrah. We were sworn to secrecy, as
he brought out a bottle from the storage room for us to try. A 2005
Grand Reserva that is not sold inside Chile, accept for in Santa Cruz
itself. Only 2,000 bottles were produced, and the current price is
about $6,000 pesos (about $12 US) a bottle that is slated to be
raised in the next couple of months as the 2006 harvest goes on the
market. He confided in us that he had a case stashed away at home for
himself. Silky and spicy, with balanced oak and legs.
Our
only complaint might be the temperature control of the wines. We were
in a wine cellar after all, and the bottles tended to be about the
same temperature as the rocks around us. Good for aging wine, not
for drinking. The cellar we were told was engineered to approximate
the environment of a cave. It is the basement of building built
against an exposed rock face. Hundreds of barrels line the cellar.
Viu Manet
Our
next stop on the budget wine tour of Santa Cruz is the Viu Manet.
They also offer a off the street walk up tasting in their gift shop.
Even though some of their plants are over 100 years old, the vineyard
has more of a modern feel to it. Still, there are all the traditions.
They are far more receptive to passing wine enthusiast. Tastings are
also about $5,000 pesos. They also have a restaurant, and offer wine
tours without reservation. The wine tours include horse drawn
carriage rides through the vineyard with Clydesdale horses. In fact,
these are some of the only Clydesdale horses we have seen in Chile.
