Viu
Manet is famous for a couple of different wines. Their newest
invention is called "secret' and can not be bought in Chilean
grocery stores. It is a line of new wines that mix Cabernet
Sauvignon, Syrahs, Carmenères, Sauvignon Blanks and
Chardonnays, with a new species of wine plant that is the "secret"
engineered by their own team of wine experts.
They
are also famous for their Malbecs. They have some of the oldest
Malbec plants in the Valley, and the plants actually predate the Viu
Manet winery. Very spicy, with a slight oak flavor, with a heavy
body. Argentina in the last few years has tried to lay claim to the
South American Malbec market through heavy marketing, but the Malbec
of Viu Manet simply puts to shame any we have tried from the
Argentina vineyards. It is typically not offered in their tasting,
but with a little prodding we were able to get them once again to
bring out both their Malbec and the Syrah.
Viu
Manet has much better temperature control over their tasting. Their
gift shop also sells their wines, along with t-shirts, books, and
other things for home. There is a very nice gift package of their
entire series of Malbecs and Merlots from 1998 to 2004, that comes
in a nice wood presentation case. These cases sell for around $60,000
pesos (about $120 US). This is perfect to take home and share with
the friends and family, as you rub in the tales of your trip.
So,
yes you can go with the tours; but, it is also fun to put together
your own wine tour and explore the valley. A combination of both,
will allow you to relax a bit and enjoy. To even go cheaper, we would
recommend you pack a nice basket lunch of cheeses and such and buy a
bottle of wine at one of the stops at the vineyards. Ask your driver
to stop somewhere in the vineyards with a view for a lazy lunch among
the grapes.
Our
total cost for the day would be about 50,000 pesos for two people.
Much depends on how carried away you get with your shopping. It is
really hard to walk away from a vineyard without a bottle or two.
After all, you come from the other side of the earth, to drink wine
in Chile. It would be a shame not take some home with you. Just
remember, there are limits on what you can take back to your home
country. You can always drink it.
In addition to this budget trip, you might add a nice lunch in Santa Cruz or one of the vineyards for another 30,000 pesos or so. You might also take a tour of the wine museum in downtown Santa Cruz.
